Your info is incorrect.

The Thomas Lincoln b 1600 d 1614 was the son of the Thomas born 1576 in Swanton Morley. Neither father nor son emigrated to the US at all. This line is made up of cousins to the president’s, and it stayed in England.

Thomas Lincoln the miller emigrated to the US in 1635 or 1636 (he was granted 5 acres in downtown Hingham in July 1636). He moved to Taunton, MA between 1649 and 1652. He was “about 80″ in 1683/4. His parents are unknown, as is his hometown. DNA testing of his descendants shows a mismatch to the president’s line, so the miller is not related to Richard or John at all. The wrong Thomases have been associated with them, and this is the misinformation I’m trying to correct.

There are at least 11 Thomas Lincolns born between 1592 and 1604 who could be the miller. Of these, one possibly had a son named Thomas, born 1627, both born in Warley Gt, Essex. Four others in various locations also fathers named Thomas (the miller was said to be Thomas, Jr).

There was another Thomas married to Mary Fowler in 1599 in Cricket St. Thomas, Somerset. This could be the miller’s father. Then we find a Thomas married to Elizabeth Bailey in Cricket St. Thomas, Somerset in 1626. This could possibly be the miller. Elizabeth died in 1628. A Thomas (same one?) was married to Thamozine (Tamsin?) Spiller in 1629, a few miles away in Chard. This is all a few miles away from where the miller’s friends, the Deane family, lived in England. So this is a possible candidate for the miller. But there is no evidence of him in Hingham or Swanton Morley, England.

It’s not true that many records have been lost. There are microfilm records of these books in the Norfolk Records Office for more than 700 surrounding communities, and I have personally examined the microfilms for this time period from Hingham and Swanton Morley.

I am researching Pittsburgh lawyer Edwin M Stanton. He is full of coincidences. So when I see a coinnidence about the Stanton/Lincoln connection, I have to ask.

As you know, Lincoln Highway was named after Abraham Lincoln. It seems a very big conicidence that Henry Isaac Lincoln would own a building that is being used today as the National Headquarters for the Lincoln Highway Association.

Unless song writer Stephen Foster had two homes, the Stephen Foster home is just outside Allegheny Cemetery in Lawrenceville PA a few miles north of Pittsburgh. Stephen Foster was connected to Pittsburgh lawyer Edwin M Stanton married to Ellen Hutchison of the wealty Pittsburgh shipping Hutchison family related to Meriwether Lewis.

This connects to the biggest surveyor of them all, Christopher Gist, who lived at Stuarts Crossing just east of Pittsburgh. His granddaughter was married to Francis Preston Blair who nominated California Explorer John C Fremont for Republican President in Pittsburgh Feb 1856.

A few minor corrections:

Lorenzo B. Lincoln was born 1808 in Taunton, MA; I have listed sons George W. K. Lincoln, William George Lincoln, James Lincoln Lincoln and John Adams Lincoln.

Lorenzo is frequently confused with Lorenzo C. Lincoln, his third cousin once removed. Lorenzo C. was born in Taunton in 1803, died there in 1899 and never went to Hawaii. Both are descendants of Thomas Lincoln the miller, who is not related to the president, despite widespread misinformation.

I have no connection to this family, but found this while doing other research. This appeared in the June 3, 1884 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette in the “Washington” column:

“Nathaniel Lincoln, one of our aged and respected citizens who has been confined to his bed with sickness for the last six weeks, is now and has been for the last three weeks, lying in a quiet painless though conscious state. The first part of his sickness was attended with great suffering, and it is a satisfaction to his devoted friends and attendants to know that he is not suffering, though they suppose him to be gradually sinking and wasting away. No gloom is felt to visiting his sick room, which may be attributed to the well-ordered life of the one who so patiently awaits his final summons. His age is 82 years.”

For Abe to be your uncle, he would have had either a sister of brother who lived and produced your line. Abe’s only sister died around 1829 in childbirth. His only brother Thomas died while very young.

It is possible that you descend from his wife’s side meaning he would be your uncle by marriage (Uncle-in-law). You might check the TODD family board to see if anyone has info there. But the best way for you to “discover” this is to begin your own tree. Start with yourself then work back through your parents and grandparents, etc. You will need REAL proof such as birth, marriage, and death records.

All of Abe’s direct family is gone. His descendants died out many years ago.

Those who are related are cousins of one level or another.

That’s a popular belief, but not proven. What is proven through DNA testing of descendants and church records is that Thomas Lincoln the miller is NOT the Thomas Lincoln born 28 Dec 1600 in Swanton Morley.

But we don’t know where in England Thomas the miller was born. There are about 11 Thomas Lincolns just in online records who were born in England about that time, any of whom could be him. My prime suspect was born in Crewkerne, Somerset and was a widower.

I have this family in my database. James Lincoln was born in NH in 1803, married Sybil __ c1831 and settled in Peru, Bennington county, VT. James’ father is recorded in the census as having been born in MA, but I haven’t traced this line further back.

However, all of the Lincolns in VT in my database (there are over 400, counting the peripheral families) are descended either from Thomas Lincoln the miller or Thomas Lincoln the husbandman. Neither of these immigrants from England was related to the president. The president’s ancestor was Samuel Lincoln the weaver.
